Currently, Bach Long Commune (Giao Thuy District) has 365.1 hectares of aquaculture, including 100.1 hectares of freshwater and 265 hectares of saltwater and brackish water. Moreover, many aquaculture producers in the commune have been earning high income. For example, Tran Duc Van (Tan Phu Hamlet) made nearly 900 million dong of income from approximately 9 tons of whiteleg shrimps in this year’s spring crop. Van shared that he had been in the whiteleg shrimp farming business for 4 years, and his annual profit was nearly 300 million dong per hectare.

As receiving directions of Nam Dinh Provincial FU and support of local authority, Bach Long Communal FU formed Vocational Group of Whiteleg Shrimp Farming. Van and 19 aquaculture farming households in the commune are currently members of the group.
According to Van, in the past, aquaculture farming households used to seperately buy feeds from agencies at the price of 45,000-50,000 dong per kilogram. However, after joining the group, through the group members can get feeds at a lower price from 3,000-5,000 dong per kilogram as the group buys feeds directly from the manufacturer in Dong Nai Province, without any mediators. Therefore, it is possible to say that the group is helping its members save millions of dong each crop.
In addition, farmers joining vocational group also have an advantage in access to favorable loans. Chairman of Bach Long Communal FU, Tran Hao Quang stated: “To support members of FU and farmers in production and business development, the Supporting Fund for Farmers of the provincial FU gives a billion dong loan to all shrimp farming members of the vocational group, meaning each member can get at least 50 million dong of loan on average.
