Google support to train for 30,000 farmers on computer and Smartphone.
(VNFU Website) – This morning May 26, 2017 in Hanoi, Vietnam Farmers’ Union in cooperation with Google organized the Launching workshop “Enhancing computer and smart phone skills of Vietnam Farmers’ Union officers and farmers”.
Under this project, Google.org will provide a grant to Vietnam Farmers’ Union (VNFU) to deliver essential digital literacy education to 30,000 farmers in nine provinces including Lai Chau, Bac Giang, Nam Dinh, Nghe An, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc, Dong Thap, Tien Giang, Bac Lieu over the next three years. Through this grant, Google.org will enable the VNFU to train 40 VNFU trainers and VNFU 500 staffs who will go on to train 10,000 farmers through offline training sessions. The grant is also expected to benefit an additional 20,000 farmers through online training program.
The objective of project in to raise awareness, knowledge and skills of VNFU’s officers and farmers in using informatics technology for improving efficiency of VNFU’s activities and farmers’ movements in particular, and for developing agriculture and rural areas, improving the living conditions of farmers in general.
Mr Lai Xuan Mon, Member of the Party Central Committee, member of National Assembly, Chairman of Vietnam Farmers’ Union said that Vietnam was an agricultural country and 70% of population living in the rural area was the resource and master players of the process of rural development and new rural construction. “For past years, the Party and the State have issued many directions, policies to promote the development of agriculture, farmers and rural area. Particularly, the directions of accelerating industrialization, modernization in agriculture have got many important achievements and agriculture became the backbone for the national economy for overcoming the hard period due to financial crisis and global economy depression.
However, the qualification of farming in Vietnam is still backward compared with the world. The percentage of internet farmer users who explore the information related to agriculture, rural areas, farmers to apply in agricultural production and rural economy development is low. Thus, the application of science and technology on agriculture faces many difficulties, the value and competitiveness of agro- products are still weak, rural labor productivity in still low in comparison with the region and the world. The support of Google for Vietnam Farmers’ Union to enhance skills and capacity its staff and farmers in using computers, smart phones and internet is very practical and meaningful. Implementing successfully the project will make a contribution to promoting application of technology, scientific progress in agriculture production and business, realizing the program on agricultural restructure towards increasing added value, improving the material and spiritual life of farmers”.
Speaking at the program’s launch workshop in Hanoi, Eric Schmidt, Chairman of Alphabet said: “Information and technology is making a difference in the lives of millions everyday. By equipping Vietnam’s farmers with skills to navigate the Internet and find useful information online, we hope they’ll be able to to enhance their farming techniques to boost productivity, and access other information valuable in their daily lives.”
Nitin Gajria, Google’s country manager for Việt Nam, said the company hopes farmers will be able to improve cultivation and farming techniques, increase productivity, and access useful information in their daily lives through the internet.
In conclusion, Mr. Lai Xuan Mon, chairman of Viet Nam Farmers’ Union, appreciated Google’s support and said the initiative is practical and meaningful. It will contribute towards accelerating the use of scientific and advanced technology in agricultural production and business, and help in the agricultural sector restructuring.
