VNFU – EuroCham Vietnam:
Collaborate to help Vietnamese businesses and farmers take advantage of opportunities of EVFTA
Vice Chairman Nguyen Xuan Dinh had a meeting and worked with Mr. Ywert Visser – Vice Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham)
At the meeting, Vice Chairman Nguyen Xuan Dinh introduced to Mr. Ywert Visser about the organization and operation of VNFU, especially about the Information Center on Agricultural Production and Consumption which has just been established to play the central role in linking farmers and facilitating the advertisement and consumption of agricultural products in the domestic and foreign markets.
Vice Chairman has told Mr. Ywert Visser about farmers’ difficulties in the application of science and technology in processing agricultural products to improve product quality and value. In order to overcome this situation, it is necessary to provide vocational training to improve farmers’ production capacity, thereby helping domestic consumers to use products with the same quality as export products.
Currently, the Government, Vietnam Farmers’ Union and Vietnam Women's Union have signed the cooperation agreement on mobilizing farmers to produce hygienic and safe agricultural products. The matter of hygiene and safety attracts the interest of all levels and sectors. However, tools and facilities to help farmers produce safe products are still limited. Very few farmers know about GlobalGAP and EuroGAP standards. Therefore, it is necessary to train key farmers through safe agricultural production models in order to replicate.
Vice Chairman said VNFU currently has a network of 57 supporting centers for farmers in 63 provinces and cities. These centers are able to build models for vocational training for farmers; provide materials; support trade promotion activities; create jobs after training; provide legal advice and assistance. The Union plans to exploit and promote these centers as well as integrate all farmer support programs into a chain to optimize resources and promote the effectiveness of the model.
At the meeting, Mr. Ywert Visser has introduced to Vice Chairman Nguyen Xuan Dinh about the organization and operation of EuroCham – the representative of European businesses in Vietnam.
Mr. Ywert Visser presented about the "Vietnamese farmer support program" initiative and the plan to implement activities in Vietnam. Accordingly, EuroCham would like to cooperate with VNFU to hold the Vietnam-EU Agriculture Forum (expected to take place in September 2019 in Hanoi) to connect Vietnamese farmers with European businesses and to bring useful information for farmers to take the advantage of EVFTA’s benefits as well as promote Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU and sustainable agricultural development.
Mr. Ywert Visser hoped that the two parties will collaborate to bring more benefits and small companies can access the collaboration programme to promote the production and export. Simultaneously, he requested to invite Vietnam Organic Agriculture Association to the Forum to enhance the development of organic agriculture in Vietnam.
Vice Chairman Nguyen Xuan Dinh agreed with the plan on cooperation with EuroCham. Bayer will devise the five-year cooperation plan. Vice Chairman affirmed the plan is really meaningful when helping Vietnamese businesses introduce and promote agricultural products, helping Vietnamese businesses and farmers better understand opportunities and challenges of EVFTA and sustainable agriculture development.
“VNFU is willing to participate in the Forum and request EuroCham and Bayer to invite the Ministry of Industry and Trade to join. VNFU will assign the International Cooperation Department to act as the focal point in cooperation with EuroCham to detail the cooperation program "- Vice Chairman Nguyen Xuan Dinh affirmed.
