Mr. Nguyen Van Them feeds his rabbits

Recognizing that local natural conditions were well suited to raising rabbits and blotched snakehead fish, Mr. Them invested in concrete-floor rabbit housing to ensure hygiene and ease of management. Rabbits are kept in pairs in separate cages, each equipped with feeding troughs and automatic drinking systems to provide clean water. Every day, he feeds the rabbits with sweet potato vines and grass harvested from his garden, supplemented with concentrate feed to improve growth performance and productivity.

After 3 to 3.5 months, rabbits reach a market weight of 2.5 - 3 kg and are ready for sale as meat rabbits. Mr. Them currently raises more than 500 pairs of commercial rabbits, which are sold at approximately VND 80,000 per kilogram. Each rabbit therefore generates between VND 200,000 and VND 240,000 in revenue. In addition to producing meat rabbits, he has also learned breeding and crossbreeding techniques to supply breeding stock. Male rabbits weighing over 3 kg after six months of rearing and female rabbits aged five months weighing at least 2.7 kg are selected for breeding. With a gestation period of 28 - 30 days, each female rabbit can produce six to eight litters per year, with an average of six to twelve kits per litter.

Alongside rabbit farming, Mr. Them converted part of his land into fish ponds for raising blotched snakehead fish, further diversifying his production and increasing household income. His integrated farming model now earns his family more than VND 300 million annually. Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Them shared: “My family used to face financial difficulties, and our land was underutilized. After reorganizing our farm to raise rabbits and blotched snakehead fish, we found the model to be highly effective economically.”

Beyond improving his family’s livelihood, Mr. Them actively supports fellow Farmers’ Union members and farmers facing economic hardship by sharing his experience and encouraging them to develop suitable livelihood models. Thanks to his successful economic development, his family now enjoys a stable income. In addition to being a successful farmer, he consistently complies with the Party’s guidelines and the State’s policies and laws, while actively participating in and taking the lead in local movements and community activities.

His farming model has demonstrated strong economic efficiency, offering a practical pathway for rural households to increase their incomes while contributing to local socio-economic development.
