Thanks to the good implementation of the waste separation model at sources, over the years, the living environment in Hai Phu commune (Hai Hau district, Nam Dinh province) has been cleaner; clean air, etc.

Involvement of local government
Mr. Tran Van Dang, Chairman of Hai Phu commune People's Committee confided: “Although it is not a destination commune implementing the model of classifying domestic waste at source; But thanks to effective communication and mobilization, and timely support, people in the commune have responded positively."

Up to now, in Hai Phu commune, 17/17 hamlets have implemented the model. The total number of implementing households is 1,920; in which the number of households using the organic waste treatment pit form with covers is 900 households. In addition, each family also has 2 separate organic and inorganic waste bins, with a total of over 2,000 bins in the commune.

According to Mr. Dang, the landscape and the environment are one of the important criteria in building a model and sustainable new countryside; contribute to building a livable countryside, a fresh and clean rural environment. Therefore, in 2014, the locality has built a domestic waste incinerator meeting environmental standards.

With about 3,000 households with over 10,000 people, on average, each month the commune Environmental Sanitation Service Team collects nearly 170 tons of all kinds garbage. Due to the good classification of household waste, the organic waste load has been greatly reduced to the waste treatment area; ensure the rate of waste collection and treatment in the commune reaches over 90%.

Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Hai Phu Commune, Ms. Pham Thi Kim Tuyet shared, the model has created an environmental protection movement that has far-reaching effects on the entire people, promote more and more practical environmental protection activities.

Efficiency from the model
Luu Rong hamlet is one of the units implementing very drastically the model of classifying domestic waste at source in Hai Phu commune. Currently, 100% of households in the hamlet have participated in the model.

Mr. Tran Van Dung, head of Luu Rong hamlet, shared that the hamlet has implemented the model of classifying domestic waste at source since 2018. At first, people were still hesitant and did not want to participate. However, after being propagated, people have clearly understood the harmful effects of waste when discharged into the environment, so they have gradually changed their consciousness.

Mr. Dung said: “The model has brought many effects such as reducing the amount of waste (reducing 50% of waste) before being put into the incinerator; reducing environmental pollution. Organic waste after composting into fertilizer, fertilizes plants very well, increases soil nutrition, has no stench and reduces the cost of buying chemical fertilizers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong's family (village 5) has applied the domestic waste classification model at source for more than 2 years. She said that in the past, all kinds of household waste were collected in one bin, so the amount of waste before being sent to the incinerator was often a lot. Since being propagated, she has actively bought 2 separate trash bins and dug a hole to treat organic waste in the back of the garden.

“The cost of buying organic and inorganic waste bins and covers for organic waste treatment pits is just over 200,000 VND, which is within my budget. There is no reason not to apply in the family, both to protect the environment, and to have organic fertilizer for the pomelo garden behind the house, "said Ms. Huong.

According to statistics of the Women's Union of Hai Hau district, currently in the whole district, there are 27 communes with 114 branches using 8,610 covers for organic waste treatment pits. And, 26,587 households used 2 bins to sort household waste at source.
